MAURER NEARS MATTERHORN
Christian Maurer (SUI3) has now covered over 475 km of the route and is fast approaching the Matterhorn.

He's extended his lead over Alex Hofer (SUI1) by over 100 km! It's clear that supporter Thomas Theurillat is playing a huge role in Maurer's success.

Theurillat is a psychologist and mountain guide. He has broken the route to Monaco down into six binders rammed full of routes and information and has check lists for every stage of every day.

IN THE COOKER
With winds blowing into southern Europe from the Sahara, it's hotting up in the valleys. Overhead, the hills are peppered with cumulus clouds, and with light to moderate winds, it's been a much better paragliding day that yesterday.

However few of the athletes west of the Marmolada have been able to get airborne. 'There's just nowhere to land. It's absolutely horrible around here. We can't wait to get out of this place!' said Aidan Toase's supporter Charlie Merrett (GBR1).

Matsubara Masayuki (JPN2) was also sweating it out west of Bolzano. Asked what the hardest part of the race had been so far, Masayuki replied, 'Today. It's so hot!'

JUST 24 OF THE 30 ATHLETES STILL RACING
Three more athletes have left the race. Vincent Sprungli (FRA1) quit this morning after two hard landings took their toll on his lower spine. Lying on his back, Sprungli told an organiser, "Please reserve me on your list for the Red Bull X-Alps 2011, I so want to come back!"

The doctors also told Ronny Geijsen (NED) to finish racing: he said he was 'very, very disappointed.'  Pierre Carter (RSA) was eliminated at 11:30 hrs this morning. First up the Gaisberg, the 43-year-old has since been slowed by his toe injury.

Every 48 hours the back runner is cut.
