HOFER FAVOURITE
No-one is going to scoff at the Hof. With two victories behind him, Alex Hofer (SUI1) is the man to beat at the 2009 Red Bull X-Alps.

He says he's even better prepared than in 2007, having flown in a pre-World Cup and the Swiss Championships, plus flying lots of XCs in France.

"Everyone's progressed - including me," he says. "We're still learning, we have a better gliders, lighter kit and we'll be able to walk further."

RACE LAUNCH AT 11:30 IN SALZBURG
The race kicks off at 11:30 on July 19 in Salzburg.

Get yourself to the Mozartplatz to witness the action, including flying displays by the Flying Bulls, before athletes burst through the start line.

After leaving the city limits, their first objective: the Gaisberg.

Live tracking will be working right from the off - keep checking to see athletes' progress, up to the minute.


COCONEA PRAYS FOR FINE WEATHER
Toma Coconea (ROM) is hoping for good weather - and this will surprise most people. He's known as 'The Running Man' for his amazing ability to cover ground by foot. In 2007 he ran 118 km in 30 hours of continuous jogging. The effort helped him secure second place.

Coconea stopped working 10 months ago to concentrate on the race. He lives in Romania at the foot of a 2500 m mountain, and spent the winter ski-touring, and has been flying and hiking continuously since spring.

When asked about the sacrifices he'd made in his life for the Red Bull X-Alps, he replied, 'actually nothing else matters. I like this comp and I want to win.'
