ATHLETES ARRIVING IN EUROPE With the start of the Red Bull X-Alps 2009 just weeks away, many of the overseas athletes have travelled to the Alps on reconnaissance missions and to finalise their preparations.Alps-based athletes, such as the Austrian, Italian, Swiss and French teams, are considered to have a 'home' advantage, which means those from other parts of the world need to work extra-hard to make sure they get to know the course as best as possible. Check out the athletes' diaries here to follow their build up to the race start on July 19 in Salzburg, Austria. read more ... | ![]() |
EARLY RACE BATTLES TO BE FOUGHT IN SALZBURG First stop for most athletes checking out the course is the city of Salzburg and the surrounding SalzburgerLand where the early salvos of the 2009 Red Bull X-Alps will be fired. After racing out of the beautiful baroque city centre - a UNESCO heritage site for 10 years - the athletes face a short and sharp climb to turnpoint 1, the Gaisberg. The climb is not as difficult as other mountains they will face during the race, but whoever reaches the summit first will have sent a warning shot to other competitors. The Gaisberg is one of the most popular paragliding take-off points in the region and is a favourite spot for locals due its easy access and stunning outlook across the city. After negotiating the Watzmann (turnpoint 2), the Grossglockner, turnpoint 3, presents the next major challenge. Situated at the southern border of SalzburgerLand, the mountain is Austria's highest and an extremely well-known tourist destination thanks to the spectacular alpine road and views. Visit www.salzburgerland.com or www.onebigpark.at for more information on Salzburg Land and what the athletes will encounter on the opening stages of their journey.
