MASAYUKI MATSUBARA IS JAPAN'S SECOND ATHLETE
Experienced pilot and athlete Masayuki Matsubara has been named as replacement athlete for Julien Serré (FRA3), who has had to drop out due to injury. Matsubara joins compatriot Kaoru Ogisawa, who finished fifth in 2007, as Japan's second athlete.

Serré was involved in a serious crash in December 2008, and after consultation with his surgeon has decided he will not be able to reach top form in time for the Red Bull X-Alps 2009 start in July.

Masayuki 'Mats' Matsubara is a 37-year-old web designer and journalist hailing from Tokyo. His personal motto is, "no fly, no life" and says he will use his "flight experience, physical endurance, and my samurai spirit to mentally prepare for any situation I will encounter."

The Red Bull X-Alps team wishes Masayuki the best of luck and Julien Serré a good recovery. Check out Mats' profile in the athletes' section.on www.redbullxalps.com

Suunto Training Blog

As proud sponsor of the 2007 and now 2009 editions of this biennial event, Suunto is providing personalised training programmes for four of the athletes. Requiring incredible endurance, Aidan Toase (GBR), Christian Amon (AUT), Honza Rejmanek (CZE) and Michael Gebert (GER) must be in top shape to take part, while at the same time avoiding the risk of over exertion.

This is where renowned physiologist, coach and Suunto consultant Eddie Fletcher comes in. Fletcher, author of Suunto’s Concept 2 Indoor Rowing Training Guide and Running Guide, will provide personalised training programmes, advice and tips on how the four athletes should prepare for the hardest race of their lives.

Check out the blog at http://suuntoatxalps.blogspot.com/ for training updates, images and stories from the athletes’ and Eddie Fletcher.
